Assimilation

“Assimilation” highlights the contrast between two human-made materials with natural origins. In this work, 3D-printed PLA and papier-mâché are arranged to grow on top of the welded steel, creating the impression that the organic matter is assimilating with the man-made structure. The steel has been treated to be a geometric, in-organic structure, while the PLA has been modeled to have a natural, organic appearance. The sculpture also explores the concept that new technologies like 3D printing could eventually replace traditional construction techniques that use wood and steel.
